Just thinking about mounting the garage doop opener onto the spring loaded shaft, kind of having it side mounted.Wondering if anyone else has any insight on this or attempted it?

Are you talking about taking a standard opener and converting it? I've never heard of anyone doing this before, but I imagine it can be done with the right know-how, parts, and tools. One thing I know for sure is be careful around those torsion springs as they can mess you up pretty bad if you don't know precisely what you're doing. Have you seen Wayne Dalton's i-drive system? I think it's pretty similar to what you're talking about. I've heard both good and bad things about it, but I don't have one myself, so I can't really give it a yea or nay. here it is if you want to check it out...

Hey thanks for the link, that opener is pretty darn neat. That unit might be an option for me,as I was considering tinkering with my old over head unit to a side mount.I guess it would a project as it is taken down right now for insulation/gyp roc.

From what I've heard you really want to stay away from the I-Drive, lots of problems.
Check out Liftmaster, they have a residential Jackshaft opener that I'll be using on both my garages.

Hey, cool, I haven't come across the Chamberlain Jackshaft opener before. I expect a full report after you install them on your garages... j/k :) ...but do tell.
I , too, have heard not so good things about the I-drive. A co-worker of mine bought one, and hired out the installation to the pros. However, he ended up getting rid of it before they even got it working due to too many mechanical problems. What those problems specifically were.. I'm not sure.
I've also heard good things about it, but of course that was only on the web which could simply be someone trying to sell them or something like that. Wayne-Dalton is a certainly a reputable brand and I'd think they'd be aware if something's consistently wrong with their I-drive, but who knows?
